Guest post outreach: a practical workflow

Good outreach is specific enough to prove you understand the publication and concise enough to respect the editor's time.

Research before emailing

Read recent articles, understand the audience and identify a topic gap or angle you can credibly contribute. Generic “I love your blog” introductions are easy to ignore.

Pitch the idea, not the backlink

Lead with the value of the proposed article. If your main request is a keyword-rich link, the pitch is backwards.

Make the email easy to process

  • Clear subject line
  • One-sentence relevance/context
  • Two or three concrete topic ideas
  • Brief credibility relevant to the topic
  • A simple next step

Follow up without flooding

One or two concise follow-ups can be reasonable if the publication has not stated otherwise. Repeated automated chasing can damage the relationship.

Track outcomes

Record replies, accepted topics, publication dates and relationships worth maintaining. Outreach improves when you learn which audiences and angles actually resonate.
