Match the publication
Read enough recent coverage to understand what the editor publishes, what has already been covered and which audience questions remain useful.
Pitch a concrete angle
A title plus a short explanation is easier to evaluate than “I can write about marketing.” Make the scope and reader benefit obvious.
Show relevant credibility
Mention experience only when it is true and directly relevant. A couple of strong examples are better than a long biography.
Keep link expectations secondary
The pitch should still be worthwhile if the editor changes or removes a promotional link. Treat the article as editorial contribution rather than a vehicle for anchor text.
Respect the answer
If the editor declines, move on professionally. The goal is a useful relationship, not winning every pitch.
